Hey !
As Father's Day approaches, I suppose it is time to let you know that I am, indeed, a father. You may have figured that out already, since I told you three months ago that a baby was coming in two months. But, still, it might be nice to have confirmation that the birth went off without a hitch, and
my family of three (plus the dog) are all happy and healthy!
Our son was born right on his due date (at least my wife can deliver things on time!), and so, if you can do some basic math, that means he is now one month old (well, 5 weeks to be more precise). We did struggle a bit with his weight to begin with, but we've now fattened him up sufficiently to give him a new
nickname: Chip, which is short for chipmunk, because of his adorable puffy cheeks.
Dealing with a newborn is a lot of work, but it was work I feel we were well-prepared for, so I think things are going pretty great so far. My biggest complaint is that newborns are kinda boring. Like, they don't do much other than sleep and eat. I've taken to reading The Last
Unicorn to him while he's doing tummy time, but that probably more for my entertainment than his. I'm reticent to say that I'm looking forward to him becoming more interactive, though, because I know that becomes its own more challenging can of worms.
So what else is going on around here? Well, we are uploading final final files for Frosthaven so production can actually, officially begin, but you can hear more about that in this Friday's Kickstarter update.
For now, I want to shed some more light on our next big project: the Miniatures of Gloomhaven, which we announced at PAX Unplugged last year. Leading up to that announcement, we were already on the
fence about bringing our new crowdfunding project back to Kickstarter because of issues we've had with community moderation. And while Kickstarter has since made significant strides to improve that on their platform, the week of our PAXU announcement, Kickstarter made their own announcement about their
partnership with a cryptocurrency company and an intention to move their platform onto a blockchain.
Which we didn't agree with. So we made sure to clarify that our upcoming project would be crowdfunded, but not necessarily be a Kickstarter project. And we started seriously pursuing other options.
You see, Kickstarter has made clear to us that they want to be at the forefront of a transition to Web3, and Cephalofair Games just isn't about that. Kickstarter has yet to supply, in the 7 months since they made their announcement, any concrete
example of how moving to a blockchain will make crowdfunding better for creators or backers, and pretty much all we have seen in that time from the crypto space is rampant fraud, theft, and financial ruin. We are quite hesitant to move in any way that would associate ourselves with or enable any of that.
So, yeah, other options. This is a very long-winded way of saying we started talking to BackerKit, heretofore known for their powerful crowdfunding pledge manager and marketing services, about launching their own crowdfunding platform. We knew they were the right people to do this, because they
are constantly innovating. They are always paying attention, scrutinizing everything in the crowdfunding space to determine how to make their service as useful and streamlined as possible.
Using BackerKit is the easiest part of a crowdfunding experience, because any time we have a problem or needed anything, they are on it, coming up with a solution. And if they could be the entire crowdfunding experience? Well, that seemed like an easy decision to make.
And so we did! BackerKit's Crowdfunding platform is here, and we are excited to announce that our next project, the Miniatures of Gloomhaven, will be launching on it early next year. Here is a landing page where you can learn more about the project and sign up for updates. Currently, we'll be offering the giant miniatures set and a second printing of Frosthaven during the project, but there will be some super-cool announcements about other offerings later this year.
I see the future of crowdfunding to be in continuing to innovate and advocate for creators and backers; to improve their experience and build trust that we're all just here to make cool things happen that will improve people's live and inspire joy. I think BackerKit is on the same page in that
regard, which is why I'm happy to be a part of their new thing.
And that's all the news I have from the last couple months. Be prepared for more baby news in the future, because that's where I'll be spending most of my time. Babies are pretty cool, after all. And baby fart jokes are the best, because they just fart, then smile, and that's the whole
joke.
