Hey !
Well, it is April, which means my birthday, Avengers: Endgame, and, of course, taxes. I know the main reason you subscribed to this newsletter was to get a reminder to do your taxes, so, you're welcome.
Last year's April also saw the advent of the "Gloomhaven #1 Celebration", which also kinda functioned as a Cephalofair Games convention of sorts (a Cephalo Fair, if you will), but somewhere early along the way, I realized I was not the right person to organize an event like that, so I decided not to make that a yearly tradition. I mean, we could easily
celebrate the one year anniversary of Gloomhaven hitting #1 on BGG, but we'll just have to do it in our hearts.
Interestingly, I don't actually have any conventions to go to in April, which (theoretically) means I have more time to get some actual work done. I've been working a lot on a new design, actually, which I've talked about pretty extensively in recent blog posts. And then I've also spent a fair bit of time trying to put together a comprehensive world bible for Gloomhaven. Admittedly, that's probably something that should have
happened years ago, but better late than never, right?
In case you were wondering, I am still regularly going to the gym, and let me tell you about some vegan supplements I found...
Hahaha, just kidding. You definitely don't need any more talk from me about working out. What do you think this is anyway? It's a newsletter about board games, and I draw the line at tax reminders and superfluous pictures of Chris Evans.
I wish I could stop, but I don't think I can.
Right, so, board games. Let me tell you, I am kind of excited about some stuff coming out later this year. First of all, I got the chance to go to LeiriaCon last month. It lined up with my wife's Spring break, so I pitched it as a vacation to Portugal. We had a great time, but I also got to play an early version of Vital Lacerda's new game On Mars. It was legit. Like, super legit. Vital is the king of heavy Euros, and this might be better than my current favorite of his, Lisboa.
And then I went to RobbCon, where someone happened to have an advanced copy of Black Angel, from the same guys who did another favorite of mine, Troyes. It is apparently coming out at Gen Con or Essen, and this game also blew my socks off. It's sort
of an iteration on the dice mechanic of Troyes, but with more cool stuff going on and interesting spatial puzzles.
Look at that Ian O'Toole artwork!
I'll be honest, 2018 felt like kind of a lackluster year in board games for me, but 2019 has already got me pretty excited.
So, all right, we're nearing the end of this letter, where I usually break down and throw some links at you for stuff I think you should be aware of, and this time is no different. I wish I could have told you about the No Pun Included Kickstarter before it ended, but, alas, it
already has, so I hope you found it on your own and got in on that Gloomhaven adventure. If you are looking for more adventures, though, you still have time to get in on the Secret Cabal Kickstarter.
Also a new board gaming podcast called Game Brain just started a few weeks ago, and I am thoroughly enjoying it so far. If listening to people talk about board games registers as a fun time for you, maybe check it out?
Well, I guess that's about it. I gotta go to the gym and go work out. Haha, I, uh, I kinda wish that was a joke, but... it's not.
