Hey !
I don't have any big announcements! It seems that in recent memory, I've only written these letters when I had something important to say. I guess there has been a lot of important stuff going on, but it's the end of the year, and who has the energy for that anymore?
Instead, I just thought I'd pop by and say, "Hey, how's it going? Umm... see any good movies lately?"
I read this column on the AV Club, A History of Violence, which chronicles all the greatest action movies throughout the history of film. The latest entry clued me into this movie on Netflix, The Night Comes for Us, which I just watched last
night.
First of all, do not watch this thing if you are at all squeamish. There are some gnarly, gnarly things going on, but the action scenes are great - amazingly choreographed and coherently shot. The plot makes absolutely no sense, but who cares about that?
Why were we talking about movies again?
Oh, hey, look! It's more Chris Evans. He's in movies, right?
We could talk about games instead. I just recently finished the last case in Detective and had a great time with it. Honestly, after hearing everyone talk it up on so many podcast, I thought it might be the Greatest Thing Ever and had to try it out. I think my expectations were too high, though. It wasn't the Greatest Thing Ever, but it was still great and a lot
of fun. My main complaint is that there was too much serialization. I wanted that cathartic resolution after each case, but it was basically five sessions working out one big case, and there wasn't much resolution until the very end.
I've also been playing a lot of Slay the Spire, which was recommended to me by the folks at Flaming Fowl, who are making the digital implementation of Gloomhaven. They were telling me how they wanted to start with a rogue-like mode similar in structure to Slay the Spire, and I'm like, "I haven't played Slay the
Spire," and they're like, "You should definitely go play it right now."
And so I did, and now I can't stop. If you like deck-building or dungeon crawls, you should also go play it right now. It is the perfect combination of the two.
Oh, and speaking of the digital version of Gloomhaven. Very soon, Asmodee digital will be needing early play testers, and they will be looking for them through the digital Gloomhaven Discord channel. If you have any interest in getting an early look at the digital version, you should definitely head over
there.
And while I'm throwing links around, you know that the pre-order for Forgotten Circles is still available, right? If you haven't ordered it, and you're a fan of Gloomhaven (which I am guessing you are), you should go do that too. You can call it a Christmas present to
yourself. Or a present to me. Whichever makes you feel better.
The latest art from the digital Gloomhaven team!
And would you look at that? There have been, like, three conventions since my last letter. Luckily, I don't have to write about them here, because I already did that in a blog post. Do you want to see me get judgy on a lot more games? Then look no further than that link.
I know my blog output has been... infrequent over this last year, but since we're approaching the end of 2018, you can definitely expect some retrospectives coming real soon.
Other than that, I hope your movie-watching and game-playing has been as wonderful as mine, and have some happy holidays!
