Hey !
The pre-order for Forgotten Circles is live! I know these things usually start with some silly banter, but this news is important! I feel like I've been trapped in a cave for the last two months working on getting this expansion done, and now we are finally in the last stages of getting the files
off to the printer, so I can finally emerge and spread the good news!
Forgotten Circles has a lot of cool stuff in it - new monsters, new items, new events, a new class, etc. - but what I am most excited about (and what has taken so long to pull off properly) is the new scenario book
format. Each scenario starts with a page of introduction, but only the first room is displayed. From there, players are given section numbers for when they open a door to a new room or accomplish some specific goal, and the rest of the book is full of these smaller sections, all jumbled up like a "Choose Your Own Adventure" book, so that the story of the scenario plays out little by little and there is no way to accidentally look ahead.
This allows for us to do a lot of cool things that we haven't been able to do very well in the past, like puzzles, secrets, and hidden objectives. I think people are really going to dig it!
But I don't want this letter to be some hard sell on
getting the expansion. I'm just really excited about it, but we can move on.
Maybe we should talk about Essen Spiel? Yeah, that's happening in less than a week, isn't it? I'm actually flying out tomorrow to make a little trip over to Happyshops, our fulfillment partner in Germany. But after that I'll get into the business of
selling and demoing both Gloomhaven and Founders of Gloomhaven. And with me will be special guests Paul Grogan from Gaming Rules! and Marcel Cwertetschka, designer of Forgotten Circles.
So if you want to run through a demo scenario with the new Diviner character before you pre-order, you can certainly do that. The pre-order will be up for at least a couple months, so that should be plenty of time to get a demo in. Dammit, I'm talking about the pre-order
again!
I am looking forward to this Spiel being at least a little less stressful than previous years. It has been a pretty bad experience in the past, but this time looks like it has the makings to be a great time. So long as I don't lose my credit card at the Chicago airport on the way there this time
around!
One thing I haven't had the time for, though, is actually looking into what new and exciting games will be coming out at Spiel this year. Well, I know Feuerland will be selling a German version of Gloomhaven. Does that count? Apparently there's a new Alexander Pfister game,
Blackout: Hong Kong, which I'll be playing with Paul Wednesday night. And I am also picking up the Feast for Odin expansion. There's probably a thousand other things, but those are the important ones, right?
Anyway, if you want to come by the Cephalofair Games booth to say hi or demo games or
ask me how the Blackout game went, we are at 4-F116. It is easy to remember because Gloomhaven is awesome like an F-16 jet.
4-F116... maybe I should have put in an image of 4 F-16s?
Also, at the risk of overlapping too much with a Kickstarter update I'll be writing later today, I do want to briefly mention that the launch of the next community driven Gloomhaven expedition
is scheduled to coincide with BGG Con next month! And I will be playing the first scenario live at the con with some super-special guests!
I don't remember if I've ever mentioned the community-driven events in these letters before, but I probably should have because they are awesome, and you should participate in them!
This one will release a scenario every two weeks (instead of every week), which should give almost all people plenty of time to get them played and keep up with the story.
And if you have no idea what I am talking about or what community-driven expeditions are, you can find the first one here. Basically, I make scenarios and then the community (i.e. you) votes on BGG to decide what happens next.
One other small thing I want to share before I go. I was on a cool new game show produced by Man vs. Meeple, combining forces with Ella Loves Boardgames to face off against my sworn nemesis, Blue Peg, Pink Peg, and, well, you can see how it went for yourself. I had a lot of fun!
I think that's about it. Maybe I'll see you at Essen next week, or at BGG Con next
month!
