Hey !
Have I mentioned that I am super into 18XX games now? I may have mentioned it once a couple months ago, sort of dipping my toe into the field at Piranha Pig Con, but then I went to Heavy Con this year and played an 18XX pretty much every day I was there.
I was pretty hooked at that point, and even wrote a blog post about it. And then I discovered people schedule games of 18XX at pretty much every convention (it's a good convention game because they usually take a while and it's hard to find local people willing to play them with
you). So I got into a game of 1817 at Origins, which took an entire day and was a completely magical experience.
Time is kind of at a premium at Origins because there is so much to do and so many cool people to hang out with, so marking off an entire day for a single game with strangers was a bit of a gamble, but it was absolutely worth it. 1817 is by far my favorite 18XX that I have played. Sure, I wish it didn't take 8-9 hours
to play, but that's just the way these things go sometimes. I had fun for all 8-9 hours, so that is definitely saying something.
So now I am headed to Dice Tower Con in a couple days (yes, even though Galaxy's Edge isn't open yet...), and I may have just signed up for a game of 1822MX. I know, that one sounds kind of made up doesn't it? But it's a real thing and supposedly it's pretty good.
See? I didn't make it up.
But I'll stop throwing random numbers and letters at you now. Instead, let's talk a little more about Dice Tower Con. Apparently my wife really liked it last year and insisted we go back, even though Gloomhaven won't be winning 500 different awards this year.
Instead, since it is a pretty laid back thing, I figured it would be a good time to get some play testing done, if anyone will be there and is interested.
First of all, I have some new Gloomhaven character classes that I'd like to take for a spin. These are actually classes tailored to be a little more basic, ideal for people who have maybe never played Gloomhaven before. I know I'm preaching to the choir here, but if you've never played Gloomhaven, or will be at
Dice Tower Con with people who have never played Gloomhaven before, I'd love to get your feedback.
Secondly, I'll be bringing my latest prototype of What We Found There, my worker placement game set in two parallel universes. If that sounds interesting to you, I am always looking for more feedback on that as well.
Finally, I'll also be running some play tests of Return to Dark Tower with Restoration Games. I get asked about this more than anything else, so I figure there might be some interest in that at Dice Tower Con, as well. I think Justin at Restoration is scheduling this one, so instead of replying to me, you can respond to this tweet of his if you want in on that.
Again, this is all just if you will be at Dice Tower Con. Sorry to tantalize you with exciting things if you won't be there, but there will be more opportunities at future conventions as well. For instance, I think there will be much more information about Return to Dark Tower once Gen Con rolls around.
My message last time has a more comprehensive list of all the rest of the conventions I will be at, so we won't go through that again. Instead I'll just briefly mention that Digital Gloomhaven is releasing on Steam for early access July 17. That's in, like, two weeks, which is pretty exciting.
You know, for as long as I can remember, I've always wanted to make video games. I tried it once, but I found the coding far too tedious. Now, at least indirectly, it's finally happening. A video game version of Gloomhaven!
I hope every one enjoys it as much as they enjoy the board game. To start with, the game will feature four characters (the Brute, Cragheart, Spellweaver, and Scoundrel), and will have a single-player rogue-like mode, but eventually the game will be expanded to other platforms and encompass the entire campaign and all the classes in the board game.
So yeah, check that out, maybe check out some of my stuff at Dice Tower Con or another convention, and I'll talk to you later!
