Hey !
So I used to do these "year in review" posts on the Cephalofair Games blog where I'd talk about everything that happened the previous year and what I was planning on doing the following year. I wasn't very organized, so it was just a public way for me to kind of plan things out for the year and lay out a list of
priorities.
Thankfully, the company has gotten more organized over the years, thanks to Price, and I also haven't written a blog post in about 2 years (maybe I should get on that?). I don't know where I'm going with all this except that I wanted to just take a moment and talk about the upcoming year on a personal level more than a "Cephalofair Games" level.
You see, the thing is, my wife is pregnant, so if everything goes as expected, a son will be arriving into our lives in May, which is a big deal. A lot of people have told me what to expect, but even so, I still don't feel like I have any idea what is coming, except that there will be challenge and happiness. I am very excited.
I am excited for many reasons about the upcoming year, but that is by far the biggest factor. I am also just super grateful for our new house and getting the chance to get more fully established here so we can be ready for when the baby comes. I think he's going to have a great life here in California, and I'm just excited to get to show him everything.
I suppose that's what you do with a child. You create grand plans. All the places you'll take them. All the games you'll eventually play with them. Of course, they have their own plans, so I don't want to set too many expectations. But still, I am excited.
Just enjoying a sunset in Big Sur.
And, of course, there are also upcoming game projects to be excited about, as well. You may have heard, but we'll be launching a miniatures crowdfunding campaign later this year for all monster miniatures in Gloomhaven, Forgotten Circles, Jaws of the Lion, and Frosthaven. It's
gonna be a whole big thing, and well, I can't say too much right now, but there may be other big announcements leading up to the campaign launch. You know, other reasons to check it out even if you're not into miniatures.
Yeah, this break between 2021 and 2022 just feels like a huge transition point for me, not just in my personal life, but also just putting the work on Frosthaven behind me and getting to work on new stuff. There's a lot of "strategic planning" going on at the moment, and I'm excited about where it leads. I've got some big ideas.
The other thing I did with my end-of-year blog posts was talk about various media and my favorite things to come out that year, so let's do a quick bit of that, too, while we're at it.
We can start with board games, though, admittedly, I haven't played a whole lot of new games this past year. Instead, I'll just say that over the past year, Lost Ruins of Arnak has risen in my ranks to become one of my top three favorite games. Nothing can beat Gaia Project, but I'm not sure where it stands with respect to La
Granja and A Feast for Odin. What did come out this year was an expansion to the game, and it is also great, vastly improving on the variability and decision space.
In video games, both Roguebook and Hades are tied in my heart and in number of hours played (somewhere north of 200). I would give the edge to Hades on style points, but it also ruined two of my controllers' analog sticks. Both games are very different takes on the rogue-like genre, but both games equally accomplish the
goal of hooking you and making you come back to it again and again and again.
Dune was by far the best movie experience I had this last year. What a way to return to movie theaters. Just mind-blowingly epic.
And my best experience watch television had to be Loki, which was just a really great, well thought out story, masterfully executed. I will say that I've also really been enjoying Wheel of Time, and I haven't started the final season of The Expanse. Oh, wait. Season 5 of The Expanse was partially
released in 2021? Nevermind. Season 5 of The Expanse wins hands-down.
I guess that's really all I wanted to say. I wish for you as much happiness and fulfillment as possible in the new year, and every year after that, as well. The times are still rough, but we can still create joy for ourselves and each other. I hope my games (particularly Frosthaven) make this new year better for you, and that you, in turn, can improve
someone else's year.
That sounded really sappy. Sorry, I am just very excited and optimistic right now. Talk to you later!
